Description

Marvin Finn Signed Folk Art Bird Pull Toy, Louisville KY, 1986

Delightful hand-carved and hand-painted bird pull toy by celebrated Louisville folk artist Marvin Finn (1917–2007), signed Finn 86 on the underside. Boldly decorated in patriotic red, white, blue, yellow, and black with dotted and striped patterns, the bird features turning wooden wheels and rubber feet that move as it rolls. Painted inscriptions USA and LOU KY proudly mark its Kentucky origins. Measuring approximately 10 x 4 x 14 inches, this toy embodies Finn’s playful, imaginative approach to folk art.

About the Artist: Marvin Finn was one of Kentucky’s most beloved self-taught artists. Born in Alabama, he settled in Louisville in the 1940s, creating toys and sculptures from scrap wood for his children and later for collectors. His signature birds, roosters, and animals—painted in lively, rhythmic patterns—became icons of regional folk art. Today, his work is represented in museums and celebrated through the public art installation Flock of Finns in downtown Louisville, a tribute to his joyful vision.

This signed and dated 1986 example offers both the nostalgia of a vintage child’s pull toy and the cultural significance of an American folk art master. A rare opportunity to acquire a piece that bridges play, artistry, and heritage.

Condition

Good overall, with finish wear and minor paint loss consistent with age. Chip noted at the top of the black side tail with touch-up visible. String is absent. Wheels turn smoothly and rubber feet remain intact. Please see photos for details.
