John Freimarck Studio Pottery Trays – Butterfly Motif, Pair
Pair of large studio pottery trays by American ceramic artist John J. Freimarck (b. 1942), known for his high-fired stoneware produced in Virginia beginning in the 1970s. Each rectangular tray is decorated with a hand-painted butterfly and sweeping abstract brushstrokes in cobalt blue, plum, and earthy tones. The decoration exemplifies Freimarck’s signature style, combining natural motifs with bold, calligraphic gestures influenced by Asian brushwork.
Large serving pieces by Freimarck are relatively uncommon compared to his smaller dishes and platters. Signed on the underside, these trays are both functional and collectible, well suited as serving pieces or striking display accents. Collectors of American studio ceramics value Freimarck’s work for its craftsmanship and distinctive painterly decoration, and large trays of this type have achieved solid results on the secondary market.
Condition:
Good overall condition, with light surface wear consistent with age and use. Minor glaze skips, small firing marks, and pinpoint imperfections are present along the rims (see photos). These do not detract from the visual appeal or functionality of the pieces.
Dimensions:
- Larger tray: 1 x 19 x 12 inches
- Smaller tray: 1 x 16 ½ x 9 ½ inches
