Tamara Winkler “Feathered Dream” Gourd Mask Sculpture, 2004
Unique mixed-media gourd mask sculpture by Tamara Winkler, titled “Feathered Dream,” signed and dated 2004. Crafted from a natural gourd, the mask features pyro-etched geometric motifs, wire, beads, mirrors, and turquoise accents. A dreamcatcher inset at the mouth, centered with a turquoise stone, adds both symbolic and decorative significance. The crown is adorned with a dramatic spray of guinea fowl and white feathers, giving the work striking visual presence.
Although best known today for her conservation and naturalist work in New Mexico, Winkler’s early creative output reflects her deep ties to the land and its traditions. Her gourd sculpture blends folk art aesthetics with themes of nature, spirit, and transformation, making this a compelling statement piece that bridges art and storytelling. For collectors of Southwestern and Native-inspired folk art, this is both a decorative and conversation-worthy work.
