Artifact Grinding Stone – Rectangular Slab Form, 2 x 6 x 3.5 in.
An artifact grinding stone, measuring approximately 2 x 6 x 3 ½ inches and weighing 1 lb 13.4 oz. Rectangular in form, the piece is fashioned from a porous, reddish-brown material with surface pitting and inclusions. One side displays a recessed rectangular channel, consistent with wear from repeated grinding. Its compact size suggests use as a small slab-type metate or processing tool, likely for seeds, herbs, pigments, or clay.
Grinding implements of this type were an essential part of daily life in Puebloan and colonial households for food preparation and material processing. This example, with its weathered surface and evident work area, offers a tangible link to the utilitarian traditions of New Mexico. A fine addition for collectors of regional artifacts or those interested in the material culture of the Southwest.
Condition
In good condition with expected surface wear consistent with age and use. The stone shows pitting, abrasions, and edge chipping, with smoothing visible in the recessed grinding area. No structural cracks observed.
