Ortega’s Mexican Folk Art Barro Betus Sculpture – Sleeping Dog with Sombrero Dreams
Whimsical hand-painted barro betus clay sculpture by Ortega’s of Tonalá, Mexico. This imaginative folk art piece features a dog peacefully asleep in bed, tucked beneath a turquoise and blue blanket with head resting on a pillow. Rising from the headboard, wire stems hold brightly painted sombreros, each adorned with a dog’s face, suggesting a playful dreamscape. The piece is signed Ortega’s on the underside and retains its original Hecho en Mexico sticker, confirming its authenticity.
The Ortega family of Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Jalisco, is renowned for barro betus pottery—a tradition distinguished by vibrant colors and a glossy resin finish. Gerardo Ortega and his family are celebrated for whimsical and fantastical subjects, often with humor and vivid personality. This sculpture exemplifies that creativity, making it not only a decorative accent but also a collectible piece of Mexican folk art.
