S.Y. Tosa Jemez Pueblo Wedding Vase & Bowl – Hand Coiled & Painted
Pair of Jemez Pueblo pottery pieces signed S.Y. Tosa, each hand coiled and hand painted in traditional polychrome style. The set includes a wedding vase and a companion bowl, both decorated with bold abstract and geometric motifs in natural pigments of red, black, and cream. The wedding vase features a large central medallion framed with feather-like designs, while the bowl is adorned with curving scrolls and stepped motifs outlined in black.
The Tosa family is a recognized lineage of Jemez potters, known for preserving traditional methods of hand-coiling and painting with natural slips. While less is published about the specific name “S.Y. Tosa,” these works are consistent with Jemez Pueblo artistry of the late 20th century and reflect the strong visual rhythm and symbolism characteristic of this pottery tradition. Both pieces are signed on the underside.
Condition
Good condition overall, with surface scuffing, rubbed areas, and shelf wear consistent with age. Some abrasions to the painted surfaces, particularly on the bowl interior, but the designs remain vibrant and intact. Please review photographs for details.
