J. Ortega Mexican Folk Art Devil Mask Plaque, Hand Sculpted & Painted
This striking Mexican folk art wall hanging by J. Ortega features eight hand-sculpted and painted clay devil masks (diablitos), each uniquely detailed with bold expressions, horns, and vivid colors. Set within a magenta tray-like frame, the masks are arranged in two vertical rows, bordered with a green, yellow, and red decorative pattern, and finished with a loop handle for display. The plaque is signed J. Ortega on the right side and retains a Hecho en México label on the back, affirming its origin as an authentic Mexican import.
Works of this type belong to a long tradition of mask-making in Mexico, where devils and fantastical figures play central roles in dances, celebrations, and ritual theater. Today, they are prized by collectors of Mexican folk art for their playfulness, cultural symbolism, and bright artistry.
