Jesus Mata Signed Mixed Media Abstract, 2006 — 24" x 48"
ia abstract panel features a dynamic field of repeated, eye-like motifs in black and gray set against a textured surface. Each of the central forms is fully pierced through the panel, allowing light to pass and creating shifting shadows that heighten the optical rhythm of the composition. The pierced design enhances the work’s dimensionality, blending the qualities of painting and relief sculpture.
Measuring 24 x 48 inches, the work is mounted on a reinforced panel with a wooden backing frame and fitted wire, designed to hang either vertically or horizontally. A powerful contemporary statement piece, it demonstrates Mata’s distinctive approach to material and pattern, balancing abstraction with tactile craftsmanship.
Artist Biography
Jesús Antonio Mata is a contemporary artist based in Las Cruces, New Mexico, known for his multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, sculpture, drawing, and installation. Born and raised in the Southwest, Mata began carving wood at the age of eight, learning craft skills from his father and later studying under regional artists. He holds both a BFA and MFA from New Mexico State University, where he specialized in drawing, painting, and sculpture.
Mata’s work explores the relationship between natural and artificial forms, often using repetition, texture, and relief to create depth and play with light and shadow. His practice incorporates a wide range of materials, from wood, stone, and bronze to layered mixed media. Alongside his studio career, he has been active as an art educator and community mentor, exhibiting regionally and nationally, including in Los Angeles and the American Southwest. His works are held in both private and public collections, and he is recognized for his ability to fuse material experimentation with conceptual clarity.
