Arts & Crafts Oak Sideboard w/ Green Tile Backsplash & Marble Top
Arts & Crafts oak sideboard or washstand, circa 1900, with a vivid green tile backsplash inset with two decorative floral tiles. The case is constructed in solid oak with paneled sides, double cabinet doors, and tapered 1.75" legs. The surface features a 0.75" black marble top, now reinforced from below following an earlier break; the repair is visible but stable for continued use.
This piece reflects the period’s commitment to honest materials and functional beauty, enhanced by its colorful tilework and straightforward lines. Comparable examples have been attributed to English Arts & Crafts workshops producing for washstands or small sideboards, with Liberty & Co and related firms offering similar tile-and-marble configurations. A striking decorative accent as well as a functional storage piece.
Condition
Good overall with wear consistent with age. Oak shows scratches, chips, scuffing, and finish wear. Marble top broken into two pieces and now reinforced from below, leaving a visible seam though secure for use. Tile backsplash with scattered chipping and glaze wear. Joints have been recently reglued. Interior shelf is a later replacement.
