Description

Welsh Black Sheep Co. & Chief Treasury of Wales Notes – 1969–71 Set (Cancelled/Proof)

A fascinating collection of private Welsh banknotes issued between 1969 and 1971 by Cwmni y Ddafad Ddu Gymreig Cyfyngedig (The Welsh Black Sheep Company Ltd.) and the Chief Treasury of Wales Limited, designed under the direction of Richard Williams. These notes, often known as the Castle Series, were produced as symbolic challenges to the British banking system and served as both patriotic souvenirs and collector issues during the lead-up to decimalisation in 1971.

The lot includes examples across several denominations — 10 Shillings, £1, £5, and £10 — featuring imagery of Welsh landmarks such as Laugharne Castle, Cardiff Castle, and the Menai Bridge, along with motifs of sheep and the Welsh dragon. Many are marked “CANCELLED 4 JAN 1971”, aligning with the withdrawal of pre-decimal currency, and one bears a “PROOF” stamp, adding to its rarity. With bilingual Welsh/English inscriptions, these notes reflect a strong cultural identity and are now highly sought-after as fantasy issues and historic souvenirs of Welsh nationalism.

Together, these pieces embody Richard Williams’ unique response to the British government’s monetary authority and remain a distinctive highlight for collectors of private or local currency issues.

Condition

Overall in very good condition for the series, with clean paper, strong print definition, and only light handling wear. Several notes are overstamped “CANCELLED”, consistent with known surviving examples. One bears a bold “PROOF” marking, adding scarcity value. No major tears or folds visible; minor edge wear in places. Please review images for specific details.

Dimensions

Each note approximately the size of a standard banknote (varies slightly by denomination).
Denominations included: 10/- (Shillings), £1, £5, £10.
