Description

1960s Zuni Sunface Squash Blossom Necklace & Earrings, Sterling & Inlay

From a fine Las Cruces collection of Native American jewelry acquired in the 1960s–1980s, this Zuni squash blossom necklace with matching earrings is both a cultural treasure and a wearable work of art. Handcrafted in sterling silver, it showcases the iconic Sunface motif, finely inlaid with onyx, coral, natural turquoise, and mother of pearl. For the Zuni, the Sunface symbolizes harmony, balance, and the life-giving power of the sun—an image that blends deep spiritual meaning with striking design. The necklace features 206 handmade silver beads (6 mm each) in a double strand, secured with a traditional hook clasp. Ten blossoms, each precisely inlaid, lead to the bold 2 1/4" x 2" naja pendant at center.

The matching earrings, originally clip-on and now fitted with hooks, mirror the Sunface design at .85" x .95". Together, the set weighs 134 grams (125 g necklace, 9 g earrings), giving it both presence and elegance. Long celebrated as the crown jewel of Native American adornment, squash blossom necklaces unite Navajo silversmithing traditions with the Zuni’s unmatched lapidary artistry. This 1960s example, preserved with a natural silver patina, reflects the mastery of its era and carries forward a legacy of beauty and meaning.

Comparable mid-century Zuni Sunface squash blossom sets seldom appear on the market, and examples of this quality are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs alike.
