Offered here is an 1862 Seated Liberty Half Dime, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during a pivotal moment in American history. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty seated with a shield and liberty cap, symbolizing vigilance and freedom. The reverse carries a delicately detailed wreath encircling the denomination “HALF DIME,” a name unique to early U.S. coinage.
Struck in 90% silver, this coin represents the smallest silver denomination of its time. The 1862 issue circulated widely during the Civil War era, making surviving examples in better condition increasingly collectible. With no mintmark, this piece is identifiable as a Philadelphia issue.
