1866 Seated Liberty Half Dime – San Francisco Mint – .900 Silver
This 1866 Seated Liberty Half Dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the Reconstruction era of U.S. history. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse shows Liberty seated with a shield and staff, symbolizing vigilance and freedom. The reverse carries the denomination “HALF DIME” within a wreath, with the “S” mintmark below. With a mintage of only 120,000 pieces, this issue represents one of the smaller outputs of the series and marks a late chapter in the denomination, which was retired just a few years later in 1873. Collectors prize these coins as both tangible history and compact silver relics of 19th-century America.
