This listing offers a 1748 Spanish 8 Reales, struck at the Mexico City Mint during the reign of King Philip V. Known as the “Pillar Dollar” or “Piece of Eight,” this coin became one of the most significant trade currencies of the 18th century. The obverse depicts crowned hemispheres between the Pillars of Hercules, with the motto VTRAQUE VNUM (“Both Are One”), symbolizing Spain’s dominion over Old and New Worlds. The reverse features the crowned Spanish arms with the mintmark “Mo” (Mexico City), denomination “8R,” and assayer initials “MF.”
The Pillar Dollar series, introduced in 1732, was minted to exacting standards of weight and purity, making it a trusted coin in global commerce. It circulated extensively across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, even serving as legal tender in the United States until 1857.
