Offered here is a pair of vintage Union Pacific Railroad “Lucky Piece” aluminum tokens, issued in 1934 to celebrate the railroad’s new streamlined trains. Struck by the Green Duck Company of Chicago for the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), these promotional pieces were distributed to showcase the innovative lightweight aluminum used in the train cars built by Pullman Car & Manufacturing Co.
Each token measures approximately 32 mm in diameter and weighs about 3.2–3.4 g. The obverse features a sleek, stylized image of Union Pacific’s groundbreaking streamliner with the inscriptions “UNION PACIFIC” and “LUCKY PIECE.” The reverse proudly states: “A SAMPLE OF THE ALUMINUM IN THE NEW UNION PACIFIC TRAIN BUILT BY PULLMAN CAR & MFG. CORP.” with the ALCOA shield and company name. These tokens are often linked to the 1933–1934 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago, where industry leaders showcased modern engineering advances.
