Description

“Cruz de Ánimas” Hand-Painted Wooden Retablo, Latin American Folk Devotional, 20th Century

A finely hand-painted wooden Cruz de Ánimas (Cross of Souls), a deeply symbolic devotional artwork reflecting the enduring Latin American folk tradition of the retablo. The composition unfolds along a vertical axis of salvation: at the summit, God the Father presides in radiant clouds; at center, Christ crucified dominates the crossbeam, flanked by the Instruments of the Passion—ladder, lance, dice, hammer, and nails—each recalling moments of the Crucifixion. At the base, Saint Michael the Archangel stands above the Animas, the souls in purgatory, rendered amid stylized red flames.

Painted in vivid mineral pigments over a black ground with delicate gilded accents, the piece captures the spiritual tension between divine judgment and redemption. The inscription “Cruz de Ánimas” identifies the theme rather than a signature, aligning it with colonial and postcolonial devotional prototypes found throughout Mexico and the Andes. The artist’s composition—formally symmetrical yet expressively painted—reveals both theological precision and vernacular craftsmanship.

A moving example of sacred folk iconography, this Cruz de Ánimas serves as both object of devotion and visual catechism—an embodiment of faith, mortality, and mercy through art.

Condition

Good condition overall, consistent with age and construction. Visible joints and minor surface abrasions throughout; pigments remain strong and luminous with only light wear at edges. Structurally sound with no repairs or instability observed.
