Pedro Linares — Large Hand-Painted Alebrije Dragon, Papier-Mâché, 28”
Attributed to Pedro Linares (Mexican, 1906–1992), this monumental papier-mâché alebrije dragon embodies the fantastical spirit of one of Mexico’s most celebrated folk art traditions. Hand-sculpted in the cartonería technique and brilliantly painted in bold hues of emerald, coral, blue, and gold, the figure merges reptilian, avian, and mythical forms into a single, exuberant creature. Every scale and detail is individually painted with rhythmic precision, a hallmark of Linares’s expressive style and his workshop’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Linares is credited with originating the alebrije form in the 1930s, inspired by fevered dreams of hybrid animals chanting the word “alebrije.” His visionary papier-mâché creatures—later adopted by artists like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo—became symbols of imagination, transformation, and the Mexican surreal. This vibrant dragon, with removable wings and horns, reflects that same visionary lineage: playful, fierce, and profoundly alive.
A commanding and culturally significant example of mid-century Mexican folk art, rich with color, movement, and mythic character.
Condition:
Good overall condition with scattered surface wear, light scratches, and minor scuffs consistent with age. Small cracks and touch-ups visible at joints and tips, particularly along claws and wings, without affecting stability or impact. The colors remain bright and expressive throughout.
