Description

Kohler Pierced Copper & Mesquite Lamp w/ Turquoise Inlay

A signed Kohler lamp, featuring a pierced copper shade with hand-cut Kokopelli, sun, and rain motifs over a solid mesquite burl base inlaid with crushed turquoise. The surface displays Kohler’s signature heat patination, producing iridescent tones of bronze, violet, and blue. The organic wood base reveals natural voids and growth patterns, emphasizing the artist’s balance between desert materials and sculptural design. Signed “Kohler” and maker-marked on the shade; underside finished with felt.

Wally Kohler, founder of the W. Kohler Lamp & Shade Co. in La Luz, New Mexico, has been creating these distinctive works since the late 1970s. A former industrial arts educator, Kohler developed a technique of marrying patinated copper with turquoise-inlaid mesquite, emblematic of Southwestern artistry. Each lamp is individually crafted, blending craftsmanship and symbolism drawn from desert landscapes and indigenous motifs.

A striking functional sculpture and an outstanding example of Southwestern studio craft.
