Zuni Elk Antler Corn Maiden “Lupts’i:kwa Dowa E’lashdoki,” Attrib. Troy Sice
Lupts’i:kwa Dowa E’lashdoki—translated in Zuni as “Yellow Corn Maiden”—represents the cardinal direction North, symbolizing courage, purpose, and protection. This exquisite carving, attributed to Troy Sice (Zuni), portrays the sacred Corn Maiden, a figure of fertility, abundance, and spiritual renewal in Zuni belief.
Expertly hand-carved from elk antler, the sculpture is richly inlaid with 42 turquoise, 21 coral, and 23 onyx stones arranged in precise geometric grid patterns across the robe and headdress. Each gemstone, averaging 1.45 mm, is meticulously set, demonstrating the refinement and balance characteristic of Troy Sice’s early style. The natural patina of the antler enhances its warmth and ceremonial elegance.
Acquired in the 1990s, this piece reflects a period of exceptional craftsmanship in Zuni fetish carving. Base marked “120–,” likely an earlier gallery price.
Condition
Excellent condition with no damage or missing inlays. Natural tonal variations and faint surface texture consistent with elk antler. All stones remain secure and polished.
