Description

1933 Baldwin Model M Baby Grand Piano – Satin Mahogany, Restored w/ Bench

An exceptional 1933 Baldwin Model M baby grand piano (Serial No. 66783), handcrafted in Cincinnati, Ohio, representing the pinnacle of Baldwin’s pre-war craftsmanship. Measuring 4′11″ (59″), this early Model M combines compact form with remarkable tonal depth, built with a solid maple rim, spruce soundboard, and a professionally refinished satin mahogany cabinet. The cast-iron plate retains Baldwin’s historic “Grand Prix Paris 1900 / Grand Prize St. Louis 1904” award decal.

This instrument underwent a documented, full professional restoration in 2002 by Guy Nichols, RPT (Registered Piano Technicians Guild). The work—totaling $5,644.50—included:

  • Complete cabinet refinish and hardware re-plating
  • Installation of Abel hammers and new hammer shanks
  • Full action regulation and key adjustments
  • Damper re-felting, center-pin and damper-rod lubrication
  • Tuning-pin reset and full voicing/balancing

Now tuned to A = 440 Hz, the piano offers a warm, resonant bass, a balanced, lyrical treble, and responsive, even touch—hallmarks of Baldwin’s “Golden Era” design. An adjustable artist bench stained to match the piano accompanies the instrument.

Condition

In very good restored condition overall. The satin mahogany finish displays a warm patina with light surface marks from careful use and a small chip on the left edge of the fallboard (visible in photos). Brass hardware remains bright and polished. The soundboard, bridges, and ribs show no visible cracks or separations. Action is smooth and evenly regulated; tuning stability is excellent. Bench seat exhibits light creasing in the leatherette surface. Maintained in a climate-controlled home and professionally serviced throughout its life.

Dimensions

Length: 4′11″ (59″) Width: 55″ Height: 38″

Provenance & Context

Produced during Baldwin’s early 1930s heyday, this Model M represents the firm’s commitment to precision and musical refinement. Baldwin’s grands of this era were known for their 41-ply maple pinblocks, solid spruce soundboards, and carefully balanced scaling that delivered concert-quality tone in a home-sized instrument. The presence of the award decals and original plate casting ties this piano directly to Baldwin’s celebrated lineage—a classic example of pre-war American piano design and enduring musicality
