1940s-1950s “Sunbonnet Sue” Quilt — Pink & White Patchwork, 94"
A beautifully hand-stitched and hand-pieced “Sunbonnet Sue” quilt featuring alternating pink and white diamond blocks with colorful appliqued figures. Each block depicts a faceless girl in a large bonnet and dress, sewn from vintage flour sack fabrics in cheerful calico and floral prints. The quilt is backed in solid pink with a narrow white edge and measures 94" x 82"—ideal for a Full/Double bed or as a smaller Queen coverlet.
This beloved appliqué design has charmed quilters for over a century. The “Sunbonnet Sue” motif originated from 1870s illustrations by Kate Greenaway, later gaining widespread popularity in the early 1900s. During the Great Depression, it became a symbol of resourcefulness, often made using saved fabric scraps and printed feed sacks. Simple yet deeply nostalgic, the pattern remains one of the most recognizable and enduring icons in American quilt history.
