Pair of Jose Lucano Mexican Hand-Painted Pottery Jars with Rope Accents
Pair of hand-painted Mexican pottery jars by Jose Lucano (Mexico, 20th Century). Each features stylized geometric and lizard motifs in black and red on contrasting clay bodies—one in natural terracotta, the other in cream-white. Both are topped with matte black rims wrapped in braided rope, a distinctive decorative feature in Lucano’s signed works. The white pot is signed Jose Lucano on the underside.
Lucano’s ceramics reflect mid-century Mexican folk artistry, drawing inspiration from traditional indigenous and Southwestern design motifs. Their bold patterns and earthy tones make them striking display pieces in rustic or regional interiors.
Condition:
Fair overall, with scratches, scuffing, and shelf wear consistent with age. Minor paint loss and surface abrasions visible on both pots; structurally sound with no major cracks or repairs.
Dimensions:
- White pot (signed): 9.5" H × 8.5" Dia.
- Terracotta pot: 11" H × 10.5" Dia.
- Shown with Campbell’s Soup can for scale.
