General Petroleum Corp. Galvanized Steel Oil Can – U.S. Steel Certified, ca. 1940s
Industrial galvanized steel oil or lubricant container embossed “G.P. CORP” to the upper body, attributed to General Petroleum Corporation of California. The underside bears a Bureau of Weights & Measures, State of California seal with United States Steel Products Company certification no. 1426. Constructed with ribbed reinforcement, a domed shoulder, locking lid clasp, and swing handle, this heavy-duty vessel reflects the robust engineering typical of mid-20th-century petroleum equipment.
Originally used for the storage and transport of lubricating oil, kerosene, or similar petroleum products, this container would have served in service stations, oilfields, or industrial operations across California. A genuine relic of America’s oil heritage, ideal for petroliana collectors or vintage industrial décor.
Condition:
Good, with age-appropriate wear and authentic patina. Surface oxidation and finish wear consistent with age; interior remains clean. Structurally sound with legible embossing and markings.
