Signed Ortega Mexican Folk Art Bandstand Sculpture — 22”
This hand-sculpted and hand-painted clay sculpture signed Ortega captures a full mariachi ensemble performing beneath a domed gazebo, topped with white doves and a balloon in the colors of the Mexican flag. Every musician is individually shaped and painted, alive with movement and color — a joyful scene that celebrates music, community, and tradition.
The Ortega name carries weight in Mexican folk art. For five generations, the Ortega family of Metepec, Estado de México has been known for their barro betus figures — brightly painted clay sculptures finished in a soft gloss. Each is built by hand in small family workshops where every detail, from the folds of a skirt to the tilt of a trumpet, is shaped by memory and care. Their art tells stories of village life, festivals, and faith, preserving a craft that remains vibrant today.
Although this piece comes from central Mexico, it speaks easily to anyone familiar with the plazas of southern New Mexico. The gazebo and musicians recall the gatherings and open-air music of places like Mesilla Plaza — shared spaces of celebration that connect both sides of the border through rhythm and color.
