Edwin Herrera Cochiti Pueblo Bear Storyteller Sculpture – Signed EH NM
Handmade blackware clay bear storyteller sculpture by Edwin Herrera (Cochiti Pueblo, b. 1966), signed “EH Cochiti NM” on the underside. A fine example of Herrera’s acclaimed wildlife storyteller series, this whimsical piece depicts a large bear carrying two cubs on its back — a symbolic nod to familial storytelling and generational teaching central to Cochiti Pueblo tradition.
Formed by hand using locally sourced clay and cedar-wood outdoor firing, the sculpture features a soft matte black finish with tan-pink painted accents highlighting the muzzles and paws. Herrera, the son of potter Mary Frances Herrera, is known for combining humor, warmth, and cultural reverence in his expressive animal figures. His work exemplifies the living continuation of the Cochiti storyteller legacy, adapted through animal symbolism.
A charming, authentic Pueblo artwork that will appeal to collectors of Native American pottery and contemporary folk sculpture.
