Traditional Zulu Ilala Palm Basket with Lid – Handmade by Gugu
A beautifully handwoven traditional Zulu basket, crafted by artisan Gugu in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa. This vessel is made from indigenous ilala palm fibers, dyed with natural earth pigments in warm tones of brown, tan, russet, and black. Each basket in this tradition is unique, taking up to a month to complete, and reflects both artistry and daily life among Zulu women artisans who weave in their homes as part of community livelihood.
The bold geometric design combines zig-zag (“Assegais of Shaka”) and diamond (“Shields of Shaka”) motifs—symbols representing strength, protection, and the balance between masculine and feminine forces. These patterns not only decorate but also tell a story of prosperity, unity, and family harmony.
Accompanied by its original printed documentation, noting artisan Gugu, code D/YXZX, and the cultural meanings of traditional Zulu basketry. A genuine and collectible example of South African craftsmanship, blending symbolic artistry with functional design.
