The work features a rhythmic arrangement of elongated, stylized figures rendered in layered tones of sienna, ochre, slate, and deep black. Through fluid brushwork and textural layering, Hawthorne achieves both movement and depth, blending abstraction with human presence in his signature California contemporary style. Signed Hawthorne at the right center.

Presented in a contemporary brushed metal frame (without glass), the piece embodies Hawthorne’s sophisticated interplay of material, tone, and structure—a compelling addition for collectors of modern and West Coast art.

Artist Biography:

Gregory Hawthorne (American, b. 1951) is an acclaimed painter, sculptor, and designer whose work bridges the boundaries of fine art, architecture, and functional design. Born in Michigan, Hawthorne studied human anatomy and sculpture at Wayne State University before relocating to California in the early 1970s. Settling in Big Sur, he founded the Hawthorne Gallery in 1995—an architectural landmark on Highway 1 known for showcasing his work alongside that of his family and other leading contemporary artists.

Hawthorne’s art is defined by its tactile experimentation and emotional depth. His paintings often blend abstract expressionism with figural suggestion, featuring elongated silhouettes, layered materials, and a warm, earthy palette. Over the decades, he has expanded his practice to include monumental sculpture in metal, wood, and resin, as well as functional art and public commissions throughout California’s Central Coast.

His works are held in corporate, private, and public collections, and he remains an influential figure in the California art scene—known for his ability to merge the natural and the human, the expressive and the structural. Each piece reflects his guiding philosophy: that art, life, and environment are in continuous dialogue.
