Antique Copper Whale Weathervane — Nautical Folk Art
A striking antique whale-form weathervane in hammered copper with iron mounting pole. Fashioned in the hollow-body style with soldered seams, this example reflects the enduring influence of 19th-century New England maritime design. The whale’s clean, stylized silhouette recalls the great sperm whales of Nantucket lore—both a symbol of the sea and of America’s whaling heritage.
The surface exhibits a beautiful, naturally developed verdigris patina from decades of outdoor exposure, contrasted by the time-softened iron directionals (“N, S, E, W”) and dual copper globes.
Condition
Good condition overall, with age-appropriate wear and visible patina from outdoor use. Natural oxidation and verdigris throughout; minor seam separation along one side of the whale consistent with age. Structurally sound and stable on its iron mount, presenting with desirable weathered character and warm coloration.

Historical Note
Weathervanes of this form were traditionally crafted by New England artisans and small foundries inspired by 19th-century makers such as Cushing & White and Harris & Co. The whale motif—beloved for its symbolism of navigation, strength, and good fortune—remains one of the most sought-after designs in American folk art.
