Description

Antique Pack Saddle with Forged Iron Rings and Leather Rigging

A beautifully weathered and authentic wooden pack saddle, hand-fashioned from solid timber with crossed top braces and broad contoured sideboards designed to rest evenly along a pack animal’s back. The iron rings and leather fittings remain intact, showing clear evidence of long, practical service. The leather straps are stamped with distinctive round maker’s marks bearing East Asian characters — likely identifying the original craftsman, possibly an immigrant blacksmith or harness maker working in the American West.

Unlike ox yokes, this form was built for mules, burros, or small horses, used to carry goods across rough terrain. The crossed upper timbers provided clearance for the spine, while the side rings secured cinch ropes or panniers. The hand-hewn surfaces, original fasteners, and patinated ironwork all testify to its utilitarian frontier origins.

While the stamped marks appear Japanese in form (田中, Tanaka), the overall design, hardware, and proportions are unmistakably American, consistent with pack equipment used in the Southwest, Rocky Mountains, and mining regions during the late 1800s and early 1900s. It may represent the work of a Japanese-American or other immigrant craftsman who contributed to western agricultural and transport systems during that period — a tangible reminder of the diverse hands that built America’s working frontier.

Dimensions: Approx. 24” W × 20” H × 8” D
Materials: Wood, forged iron, and leather
Condition: Excellent authentic age and wear with deep, stable patina. Structurally solid and complete with all major components intact.

A rare survivor of early American pack-train life — evocative, sculptural, and steeped in history. Whether displayed as a rustic artifact or centerpiece of a Western collection, this saddle embodies the rugged ingenuity of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship.
