Rockford Furniture Co. Mahogany Secretary Desk & Hutch, Hand-Painted Florals
An elegant mahogany secretary desk and bonnet-top cabinet by Rockford Furniture Company, Rockford, Illinois. The upper section, surmounted by a graceful arched pediment, features a single door hand-painted with a lush bouquet of roses and enclosing two adjustable mahogany shelves with heights of 8", 8.5", and 11".
The slant-front writing surface is similarly adorned with floral decoration, opening to a fitted interior of eight compartments and a small dovetailed drawer measuring 1.75" in depth—an intimate workspace for correspondence or display. Below, two full-width drawers with traditional dovetail joinery offer generous storage. The piece rests on delicately turned and fluted legs with subtle tapering, reflecting the Colonial Revival influence prevalent in Rockford’s mid-century production.
A beautifully composed statement piece, equally at home in a traditional interior or as a focal point in a curated modern setting.
Condition
Good overall condition, exhibiting wear consistent with age and use. Surface scratches and scuffing present, including to the writing flap and drawer fronts. Approximately one-inch chip to a rear leg; upper door shows minor warping. Lacking key. The floral decoration remains vivid and well preserved, and all drawers operate smoothly. Structurally sound with no significant losses or repairs noted. The desk presents well overall despite these age-appropriate flaws.
Dimensions
Height: 71.5 in Width: 27.5 in Depth: 16 in
Two removable interior shelves at 8", 8.5", and 11" spacing.

Historical Note
Founded in the early 1900s, Rockford Furniture Company operated amid Rockford, Illinois’s thriving furniture-manufacturing community—once second only to Grand Rapids in national output. Its makers, many of Swedish descent, emphasized honest craftsmanship, solid hardwoods, and restrained decorative details, blending Old World technique with American design. Surviving examples such as this secretary demonstrate the firm’s enduring reputation for quality and its contribution to Rockford’s century-long legacy as a hub of fine furniture production.
