Vietnamese Dong Son Bronze Bell-Form, 13.5″ Tall, Arched Handle & Patina
A substantial bronze bell from the Dong Son cultural tradition of northern Vietnam, dating to approximately the late 1st millennium BCE. The piece presents a domed head with an integral arched suspension handle, straight tapering sides, and a rectangular mouth. A finely cast braided relief band encircles the body near the base, a decorative hallmark also seen on authenticated Dong Son bronzes. The surface exhibits an attractive variegated green-gray patina, the result of long oxidation and age.
Comparable in size and form to a documented example sold by Artemis Gallery (Lot 60f, November 4 2021) — see Vietnamese Dong Son Bronze Bell w/ Great Patina, Artemis Fine Arts, 2021 — this specimen displays nearly identical proportions (approx. 13 in tall) and decorative braided motif. Such bells, typically un-clappered, were sounded externally with a mallet and are thought to have served ceremonial or ritual purposes within the Dong Son culture.
A compelling and well-cast example of Southeast Asian bronze artistry, suitable for serious collectors or institutions seeking representative material of the early metallurgical traditions of Vietnam.
Condition
In good condition with surface wear, verdigris, and oxidation consistent with age. Patina stable and attractive, with minor casting irregularities and encrustation within the interior cavity as shown. No major losses or structural issues observed.
