Description

Japanese Sterling Silver “Garden Bridge” Salt & Pepper Shakers, c.1920

A rare and beautifully crafted pair of Japanese sterling silver “garden bridge” salt and pepper shakers, dating circa 1920. Each miniature is meticulously formed as an arched footbridge with finely engraved planked decking, pierced railings, and cobblestone-textured approaches. The undersides feature sliding refill doors, a hallmark of early Japanese export silver miniatures. Marked “STERLING” on the underside representing silver of exceptionally high purity and craftsmanship.

Pieces of this type were often created for export to Western markets in the early 20th century, admired for their artistry and whimsical design.

Condition:

Good overall condition with mild tarnish and light surface wear consistent with age. Retains attractive patina. No dents or losses observed. Both shakers with intact refill slides beneath. Polishing left to the discretion of the buyer.

Dimensions:

Overall: 7/8 x 3 7/32 x 1 1/32 inches
Weight: 53.43 grams (combined)

A delightful and scarce pair exemplifying the artistry of early Japanese export silversmiths. These miniature “garden bridge” shakers combine functional tableware with sculptural design, making them a highlight in any collection of 20th-century silver or Asian-inspired decorative arts.
