Mario López Torres Woven Rattan Pig Chest, Taller Ihuatzio Michoacán, circa 1974
Charming and functional woven rattan pig-form chest by Mario López Torres (Mexican, b. 1952), crafted at his Taller Ihuatzio studio in Michoacán, Mexico, circa 1974. Fashioned from tightly woven chuspata reed over a metal frame, the piece opens at the center with decorative latch hardware, revealing a hollow interior suitable for storage. The eyes and tail are formed from sculpted metal accents, lending lifelike detail and whimsical character.
Bearing the original brass medallion stamped “TALLER IHUATZIO MICH. / Mario López Torres / Tzintzuntzan / Hecho en México,” this work exemplifies López Torres’ celebrated fusion of natural material, modern design, and artisanal craft. Similar examples of his woven animal furniture—such as pigs, ducks, and monkeys—are documented through design dealers and auction houses including Circa Who and John Moran Auctioneers.
Condition
Excellent overall with minor surface wear consistent with age. Small areas of natural fiber abrasion visible upon close inspection (see supplemental image), typical of vintage chuspata reed. Structurally sound and retains full form integrity. Original medallion intact and legible.
