Description

Mexican Folk Art Milagro Cross — The Symbols of Christ’s Life, 15½"

A richly symbolic work of folk devotion, this hand-painted wooden cross unites craftsmanship and faith through vivid color and ceramic Milagro-style figures. Each handmade element reflects a moment or symbol from the life and Passion of Jesus, inviting contemplation of his earthly journey and divine sacrifice.

Among the applied figures, the white dove represents the Holy Spirit descending at Christ’s baptism; the hammer recalls Jesus’ humble beginnings as a carpenter and foreshadows the Crucifixion; the rooster marks Peter’s denial before the dawn’s first crow; and the Sacred Heart celebrates divine love and redemption. The ladder evokes both the descent from the Cross and the spiritual ascent to Heaven, while the spear recalls the soldier’s lance that pierced Jesus’ side after his death — a poignant emblem of sacrifice and fulfillment. Additional symbols, including the chalice and sponge, complete the tableau of the Arma Christi (Instruments of the Passion).

Painted in radiant tones of crimson, emerald, blue, and gold, this cross embodies the expressive artistry of Latin American folk traditions — where faith is told through form, color, and texture. An inspiring piece for collectors of devotional art or sacred symbolism.
