Mario López Torres Brass & Woven Rattan Monkey Sculpture, Taller Ihuatzio, ca. 1974
Charming mid-century rattan and brass monkey sculpture by Mario López Torres (Mexican, b. 1952), created circa 1974 at his celebrated Taller Ihuatzio workshop in Michoacán, Mexico. Meticulously handwoven from chuspata reed over a metal frame, the figure features cast brass hands, feet, and face, radiating both character and craftsmanship. The monkey sits in a contemplative pose beneath a stylized palm leaf canopy, a signature motif of López Torres’ early figurative works.
Condition
Excellent condition overall, with no visible damage or repairs. The weave remains tight and evenly toned, and the brass retains a warm, natural patina consistent with age.
