This hand-carved wooden alebrije by Oaxacan artist Vicente Hernández Vázquez embodies the imaginative spirit of Mexico’s renowned folk art tradition. The dynamic figure depicts a fantastical winged creature in flight, rendered in vivid red tones with striking bursts of yellow, turquoise, violet, and green. Exaggerated wings and elongated features give the piece an expressive, almost kinetic quality that captures the artist’s distinctive style.
Carved from copal wood, the preferred medium for Oaxacan alebrijes, the sculpture is signed “Vicente Hernández Vázquez” on the underside. Each surface is meticulously hand-painted in Hernández Vázquez’s signature fireworks-like motif—an intricate play of color and pattern characteristic of the celebrated woodcarving villages of Oaxaca.
Condition:
