14¾" Rustic Wooden St. Francis Santo — Folk Art Devotional
A beautifully hand-carved and painted solid wood santo figure depicting St. Francis of Assisi, rendered in the folk devotional tradition. The saint is shown barefoot, tenderly holding two birds—an enduring symbol of his humility and reverence for all living things. The sculptor’s expressive carving, combined with vivid polychrome detailing in ochre, green, and red, evokes the regional character of New Mexican or Spanish Colonial religious art. Carved from a single block of wood, the figure’s stylized features and patterned robe suggest a mid-20th century artisan interpretation rooted in centuries-old santero traditions.
