Hopper Shannon Hand-Forged Iron Comal with Chile Pepper Handles
Forged by New Mexico blacksmith Hopper Shannon, this substantial iron griddle/comal reflects the rugged, fire-driven craftsmanship of his Hatch, NM studio. Known for blending traditional blacksmithing with regional themes, Shannon incorporates a pair of sculptural chile-pepper–inspired handles, each hand-shaped to echo the form of a Hatch chile—an iconic symbol of the region. His stamped mark appears near the right handle, confirming the maker.
The large cooking surface bears rich heat toning and natural forge patina created through repeated heating, hammering, and quenching. Built with the weight, balance, and durability expected of a working comal, it can serve as a functional outdoor cooking tool, a hearth accessory, or a statement decorative piece. This work beautifully captures the intersection of utility, sculpture, and New Mexico cultural identity—an object made to educate the eye, engage the senses, and enchant any kitchen or display.
CONDITION
In good condition overall, with surface wear, heat coloration, and patination consistent with hand-forged iron and functional use. No cracks, breaks, or structural issues are observed. Minor irregularities are inherent to the forging process and add to the handmade character. Comes exactly as shown.
