Description

Dorothy McCray Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas, Framed

Vibrant and expressive, this original abstract oil painting by Dorothy McCray showcases the artist’s signature interplay of gesture, motion, and layered color. Signed lower right and again on the verso, the composition features sweeping strokes of red, blue, yellow, and green, creating a dynamic visual rhythm characteristic of McCray’s mature work. Executed on Fredrix stretched canvas and presented in a linen-matted frame without glass, the piece has a strong wall presence and a sophisticated contemporary aesthetic.

CONDITION

In good overall condition with no visible losses to the painted surface. Canvas remains taut and coloration is strong. Frame shows noticeable scuffing and surface wear, consistent with age and handling, but is structurally sound. Linen matting displays minor toning. Please review all photos for the most accurate assessment.

Artist Biography

Dorothy Westaby McCray (1915–2008) was an American painter, printmaker, and educator whose career became deeply tied to the arts community of Silver City, New Mexico. A graduate of the State University of Iowa, she later expanded her studies in lithography and intaglio while building an influential three-decade teaching career at Western New Mexico University. Known for her vibrant, fluid abstractions and innovative print techniques, McCray exhibited nationally and internationally and received the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Arts in 1992. Her legacy continues to resonate throughout the region’s modernist tradition.

A compelling and colorful work by a respected Southwestern artist—an excellent addition to any collection.
