Mexican Folk Art Nicho Retablo — Día-de-los-Muertos with Guadalupe
This hand-crafted and hand-painted Mexican folk art nicho retablo presents a vibrant Día-de-los-Muertos tableau set within a wood shadowbox frame with a glass front. Centered around a printed image of the Virgen de Guadalupe, the interior is richly decorated with sequins, rhinestones, fabric flowers, and traditional ofrenda elements. Two charming calavera figures—a nurse and a gentleman—stand beside miniature hand-molded foods, skulls, and flowers, echoing the joyful symbolism of Day-of-the-Dead altars. The cobalt blue exterior, scalloped edging, and layered mixed-media details are characteristic of contemporary Mexican artisan work from central regions such as Mexico City or San Miguel de Allende.
Both free-standing and wall-mountable, this devotional shadowbox is a lively example of modern nicho craftsmanship and a colorful addition to any folk art or cultural collection.
CONDITION
In good condition with light wear consistent with handmade folk art materials. No damage observed, and all interior elements remain intact beneath the glass front.
