Paul O. Abbe Industrial Ceramic Milling Jar w/ Iron Clamp
At first glance, this white-glazed vessel reads like a simple crock—but it’s actually a precision-engineered ceramic milling jar made by Paul O. Abbe Inc., a firm founded in 1911 and long respected for producing the mills and mixers that powered America’s industrial growth. These jars were central to laboratories and factories where pigments, ceramics, minerals, and metals were ground into fine, controlled powders.
This example retains its original iron/steel clamping hardware, including a cast component stamped “48.” The thick-walled ceramic body—marked “PAUL O. ABBE INC.”—was built to withstand the constant impacts of milling media. Today, pieces like this are admired not only as scientific tools but as sculptural reminders of early- to mid-20th-century manufacturing ingenuity. Its weight, presence, and visible craftsmanship give it a compelling industrial character that elevates it from equipment to artifact.
CONDITION
In good condition for its industrial past, with no remarkable damage. The porcelain shows minor spotting and light wear; the iron/steel hardware displays oxidation and surface rust but remains solid. Please review photos for a full visual understanding.
