Description

Early 20th C. Southern Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, 9"

This charming stoneware jug represents a long-running Southern pottery tradition that stretches back to the early 1800s, when rural workshops produced durable alkaline-glazed vessels for everyday use. Made between 1900 and 1925, this example shows the hallmarks of North or South Carolina workshop production: a hand-pulled strap handle, rounded shoulder, narrow spout, and a fully glazed base with visible wire-cut swirl marks from its removal off the wheel.

Its deep brown alkaline glaze—created by blending wood ash, lime, and local clays—naturally drips into warm ochre tones, giving each jug a unique fingerprint. With its compact 9-inch size and solid 5 lb weight, it fits beautifully into farmhouse, rustic, and Americana-inspired displays. More than a simple container, it’s a surviving piece of a craft that once supplied households throughout the Southern countryside.

Condition

In good overall condition with no remarkable damage. The handle has no chips, and visible bumps or specks appear to be under-glaze firing marks. Minor glaze flakes, small abrasions, and natural kiln effects are consistent with its age and utilitarian production. Please review the photos for close-up details.
