Sanford’s Library Paste Stoneware Crock w/ Locking Lid & Wire Handle
This impressive Sanford’s Library Paste stoneware crock dates to approximately 1920–1935 and stands as one of the most complete examples of early commercial office-supply containers. Produced for Sanford Ink Company—an industry leader that patented its library paste formula in 1892 —the crock retains its bold cobalt SANFORD’S INKS / PASTES transfer and its striking multicolor Library Paste paper label. These graphics, together with the “Illegal to Refill” notice, reflect post-1906 Pure Food & Drug Act requirements and the visual style of the 1920–30s era.
The vessel’s form, glaze, and impressed base marking (appearing as “150-62”) strongly correspond to contract production by the Western Stoneware Company of Monmouth, Illinois, a major supplier of industrial stoneware in the early 20th century. Featuring its original locking stoneware lid, steel bail handle, and turned wooden grip, this design mirrors the institutional paste containers documented in the Michigan State University Campus Archaeology Program, where a recovered Sanford jar illustrated similar historical usage in libraries, schools, and offices. The MSU research also notes the 1898 patent for Sanford’s “Utopian” jar design, created to keep paste and brushes moist for practical daily use—underscoring the functional heritage behind pieces like this.
Crocks retaining both labels, full hardware, and a functional locking lid are notably scarce. This example makes a striking display piece for collectors of Americana, advertising artifacts, stoneware, and early office-supply history, while remaining an appealing, fully intact representation of a classic utilitarian form.
CONDITION
In good condition with no remarkable damage. Paper labels show age-related wear and losses; glaze exhibits minor manufacturing marks typical of the period. Steel handle displays normal oxidation, and the wooden grip shows age darkening. The locking lid remains functional. Please examine photos for exact details.
