Victorian Cherub Jeweled Mourning Bag with Garnet & Pearl Accents
This late Victorian to early Edwardian mourning-appropriate evening bag features an ornate metal frame in the Renaissance Revival style, decorated with beautifully sculpted cherubs, laurel swags, and a crowned central medallion. The frame is set with garnet-colored cabochons, pearl accents, and mottled stone-like ovals, surrounding a gathered black silk exterior. Its clasp has tested as sterling, though the frame itself is unmarked, a common trait of European purse frames from the late 19th–early 20th century. The interior retains its original pink silk lining, further supporting its turn-of-the-century origin.
Condition:
In good condition overall with age-appropriate wear. One decorative stone on the far right of the frame is absent. The exterior silk shows scattered stains, small areas of discoloration, and expected handling wear; strap shows wear as well. The pink silk lining is intact with typical aging. Sterling-tested clasp functions properly.
Dimensions:
8" height (12" with strap) x 9" width x 1" depth
Weight: 152 grams
