1930s-40s Bornhoff’s Dairy Glenview IL Embossed Galvanized Steel Milk Can No. 34
A vintage galvanized steel 10-gallon milk can from Bornhoff’s Dairy, Glenview, Illinois, dating to approximately the 1930–1950 period. The body is deeply embossed “BORNSHOFF’S DAIRY / GLENVIEW ILL.”, a scarce marking from a small farm-based dairy that once operated in the Glenview/Northfield Township region before suburban development. Surviving embossed equipment from dairies of this size is uncommon, making this example especially appealing to collectors of Illinois agricultural history.
The can retains its original farm-painted identification number “34,” and both side handles are stamped “SOLAR,” identifying them as authentic early–mid 20th century hardware produced by Solar Manufacturing Co., a known supplier of heavy stamped steel components for genuine dairy equipment. Thick-gauge galvanized construction, rolled seams, and the substantial 20 lb weight all reflect true period manufacture. With clearly readable embossing, period hardware, original numbering, and a naturally aged patina, this 10-gallon can presents as a character-rich artifact from Glenview’s early dairy era and a striking decorative piece for farmhouse or industrial settings.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with expected use-related wear. Shows dents, paint fading, and areas of rust/oxidationconsistent with age and outdoor display. Surface retains authentic patina throughout. Embossed lettering remains legible, and the painted “34” is worn but visible. Interior shows age-darkening typical of dairy use. Structurally solid with no unexpected perforations aside from the small intentional drainage holes at the base, as shown.
