Southeast Asian Bronze Standing Bodhisattva, 19th C., Lotus Base
A Southeast Asian bronze standing bodhisattva, likely 19th century, crafted in a Khmer–Lanna–Lao blended devotional tradition. The figure stands on an oval lotus base, with a tall conical tiered crown featuring scale-like panels and stylized foliate elements. The serene, downcast expression is framed by large circular earrings and finely modeled features. The right hand forms Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of teaching, while the left articulates Varada Mudra, symbolizing compassion and bestowal. Incised floral patterns on the dhoti, elongated fingers, and elegant proportions reflect the aesthetic vocabulary of regional workshop practice. The alloy, casting technique, and stylistic choices align closely with its companion figure, indicating both emerge from the same artistic lineage. A refined representation of Avalokiteshvara.
CONDITION
In good condition overall, with expected surface wear from age, including scattered patination, oxidation, and darkening to recesses. Minor casting flaws, abrasions, and small losses at the crown and hand tips are present. The underside is open and shows oxidation typical of 19th-century Southeast Asian bronzes. Stable and visually appealing.
