Mid-Century Polar Bear Ceramic Lamp w/ Tiered Fiberglass Shade
Mid-century ceramic table lamp featuring a sculpted mountain-form base with a glossy mottled glaze in browns, tans, and icy grays, paired with an applied white polar bear figure. The underside bears an impressed oval mold mark and a handwritten “Made in Japan”, identifying it as a 1950s Japanese export piece. The lamp retains its original American-made two-tier fiberglass shade, distinguished by its embossed diamond-feather texture and dark rawhide-style whip stitching—classic features of mid-century U.S. shade workshops.
This distinctive combination of Japanese ceramic craftsmanship and period American shade design gives the lamp strong visual presence and authentic mid-century character. A unique addition for collectors of novelty lamps, lodge décor, or 1950s export ceramics. Please review condition notes regarding structural cracks and shade fractures.
CONDITION
Fair overall. Fully functional and tested. The ceramic base shows multiple cracks with evidence of older, poorly executed repairs, especially near the neck and along faceted edges. The original fiberglass shade has several cracks, losses around stitch holes, and age-related brittleness. Wear consistent with age and use is present throughout.
