Zuni Sterling Silver Heishi Necklace with Inlay and Pendant
This necklace is attributed to Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa) and dates to the late 20th century. It is constructed as a single strand of rolled shell heishi beads strung on cotton and accented with bench-made sterling silver beads and cone elements. Suspended at the center is a cylindrical sterling silver pendant featuring channel inlay of turquoise, black onyx, mother of pearl, and jasper.
Heishi beadmaking has long been central to Santo Domingo jewelry traditions, and this example demonstrates the precision and balance associated with the pueblo’s beadwork. The combination of a dense heishi strand with a bold inlay pendant reflects stylistic developments that became increasingly common in Santo Domingo jewelry during the latter half of the 20th century. The necklace is unsigned, consistent with much Santo Domingo production of the period.
Condition
Good condition. Stones are secure in their settings. Sterling silver exhibits light surface wear and natural patina consistent with age and use. The necklace has not been polished. Stringing appears intact and wearable.
