Description

Vintage Zuni Thunderbird Bolo Tie with Turquoise, Onyx & Mother of Pearl Inlay – Sterling Silver

This vintage Zuni bolo tie features a finely handcrafted thunderbird figure, a revered cultural symbol representing power and protection. Executed in intricate stone-to-stone mosaic inlay, the design incorporates turquoise, black onyx, mother of pearl, and shell — classic materials in Zuni jewelry artistry.

The thunderbird is rendered in sterling silver, and the detailed inlay work demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship consistent with traditional Zuni techniques. The piece is signed on the reverse with the initials “CH” (artist unconfirmed), a mark often associated with individual Zuni silversmiths working mid-to-late 20th century.

The slide is mounted on a black braided leather cord and finished with long sterling silver aiguille tips.

This is a beautiful example of wearable Zuni art — rich in symbolism, authentic in materials, and striking in visual impact.

Condition

Good vintage condition. The inlay is intact with all stones securely set. The sterling silver shows natural patina and light surface wear consistent with age, particularly on the tips. The piece has not been polished — we leave that choice to the buyer. The clasp mechanism functions securely and holds the slide firmly in place.

Historical Context

The thunderbird is a revered figure in Native American iconography. In Zuni tradition, it represents power, protection, and spiritual presence — associated with the life-giving force of rain and the strength of the natural world. Its bold, symmetrical form lends itself naturally to jewelry design, where it has become a signature motif in mid-20th century Zuni inlay work.

Zuni artisans are especially known for their exceptional stone-to-stone mosaic inlay technique — a complex process requiring each stone to be hand-cut and precisely set against the next, without the use of bezels. This method became widely practiced in the early-to-mid 1900s, when Native jewelers began producing finely detailed figural work, often depicting sacred animals such as birds, deer, and katsinas.

Materials such as turquoise, black onyx (or jet), mother of pearl, and coral were favored for their vibrant contrast and natural beauty. These stones were often sourced locally or through regional trade and carefully arranged to convey motion and meaning within a small wearable form.
