1885 Spain Five Pesetas – Silver, Madrid Mint
his is an 1885 Spanish Five Pesetas silver coin issued under the authority of King Alfonso XII for general circulation. The coin bears the date 1885 and is struck in silver. A distinct “M” mint mark is visible on the reverse, indicating the Madrid Mint.
The obverse displays a left-facing bust of King Alfonso XII. Surrounding the portrait is the legend “ALFONSO XII POR LA G. DE DIOS,” with the date “1885” positioned below the bust. Denticles frame the rim.
The reverse features the crowned Spanish coat of arms at center, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, each wrapped with a banner. The legend “REY CONST. DE ESPAÑA” appears around the upper perimeter, with the denomination “5 PESETAS” at the bottom. A clear “M” mint mark is present in the right field of the reverse.
